Yellow daffodils and forsythia in bloom

March Blooms – 2019

I hope everyone had a wonderful Pi Day yesterday! 🤓 I’m sad we are on spring break for Pi day this year because we usually have a celebration in every class. This year we had our celebrations the Friday before break, but it just wasn’t the same. However, my first block class did win the door decoration contest, so we get a pancake breakfast after spring break!

Okay okay, onto the flowers. I’m so happy to see so many daffodils in bloom right now. There’s just something about that bright yellow flower that warms the soul. I planted a ton of daffodil bulbs along this bank. I was tired of the slope eroding and I needed something pretty to keep the weeds company. I’m hoping for them to naturalize all along there and to have a bank of daffodils.

I have to give Paul credit for helping me out with a lot of the daffodil bulbs over my fall break. I had reached a breaking point where I wasn’t sure I could finish on my own. So, he stepped up and did the fun part – digging holes.

I am so excited about this next flower. I know it doesn’t look like much, but I wasn’t sure it was going to come up at all! Normally winter aconites are one of the first flowers to bloom – before daffodils and crocuses. I saw them on Instagram for weeks. I saw them at Cheekwood in February, and thought, well, it’s over. They’re not happening. Then…out of nowhere, I noticed one had flowered! A couple others have come up as well, but not flowered yet.

I’m so glad I planted all these bulbs in the fall. It was a lot of work, but it is worth it now to see some bright flowers in the garden

Snowdrops (Galanthus) and snowflakes (Leucojum) were new to me, but I decided to give them a try after seeing them online at Longfield Gardens.

And lastly, to crocuses are on their way out, but I’ve got a few still going.

I definitely need more hellebores in my life! The ones that are blooming have been blooming for a while. And their foliage is evergreen. Win-win. I got the Shooting Star Lenten Rose at the end of season sale at Moore and Moore Garden Center, and the other is from the plant swap.

Another newcomer for me is this anemone. I planted the corms in the fall with everything else, and am happy to see this early bloomer. I am also starting some from seed, so we will see how that turns out.

That’s all folks! Be sure to check out May Dreams Gardens who hosts Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day each month. I love seeing what others have blooming in their part of the world.

  1. You can’t beat bulbs at this time of year, they make such a wonderful splash of colour when not much else is flowering.
