Shi Shi Gashira Camellia

January Blooms – 2019

Weather has been a roller coaster so far this winter. Some weeks it feels like winter and other weeks it feels like spring. Some bulbs have started to come up. I’ve seen other people have snowdrops and daffodils flowering, but mine didn’t get that far before the freezing weather came back. I’ve never grown spring-flowering bulbs before, so I have no idea if they will come back again in the spring or not. Let me know in the comments if you’ve experienced this kind of fluctuating weather before and how it affects the bulbs!

As far as blooms go, they are mainly limited to my amaryllis bulbs indoor and my camellia bushes outdoors. I bought two Red Lion amaryllis kits from Home Depot and I am happy with how well they have done with very little effort on my part.

This first amaryllis was labelled Red Lion, but as you can see, it is not that! Maybe ‘Minerva‘? I really love the way the Red Lion Amaryllis has turned out. The red is a little bit shimmery in the light. I also won an amaryllis from Longfield Gardens and it is just now starting to grow. I’m excited to have a succession of blooms through winter.

My camellia Shi Shi Gashira has been blooming off and on all winter. This is probably one of my favorite plant purchases of 2018. I also planted camellia Sparkling Burgundy, but haven’t seen blooms on them yet.

And….the first bloom on my hellebore! I get a little anxious when I see flowers blooming in other people’s gardens that are in my garden as well. People have been sharing pictures of their hellebores blooming for a couple weeks now. Finally, this week, one bloomed. There are so many flower buds on this one, so it should be blooming for a while.

There are a few other blooms from the weeds popping up everywhere, but I’ll leave those out. 😉 What’s blooming in your neck of the woods? Head over to Carol Michel’s May Dreams Gardens to see what is blooming around the world this month.

  1. Hello, I am southwest of you in North Mississippi, and I think your bulbs will be fine. A cold spell may slow them down, but it won’t kill them.
Beautiful Amaryllis, both of them. The mislabeled one may be ‘Apple Blossom’ – I received one as a Christmas gift several years ago, and it looked very similar to your unidentified one.
    Happy Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day!

    1. Good to know about the bulbs! I am a bit of a nervous Nellie with new plants – just want them to make it!

  2. It has been a roller coaster winter here on Long Island with temperatures in the 50’s some days, then dropping down into the 20’s and 30’s. Some of the plants are confused and getting new growth when they should be dormant. We had similar conditions last winter and all the bulbs were just fine. Love your Camellia!

  3. Congrats on the beautiful hellebore bloom and the abundant buds! For some odd reason I can’t explain, my own hellebores usually bloom in spring (if at all). The Camellia and Hippeastrum are wonderful too.

    1. Different varieties seem to bloom at different times. I have a different variety that isn’t blooming yet.
