This month in gardening - October - plant bulbs

This Month in Gardening – October

I am excited to continue this monthly installment of This Month in Gardening. I am perhaps most excited about planting all the spring flowering bulbs I bought – narcissus, crocus, anemone, leucojum. Just a reminder – I live in Nashville, Tennessee, which is zone 7 hardiness zone.

Perennials

For perennials – now is the time to start planting “fall planted bulbs”. This includes narcissus, hyacinths, tulips, crocus, anemone, amongst others. I have purchased from Longfield Gardens and Dutch Grown and am planting them this month.

Annuals

Some of the most popular annuals for this time of year include mums and pansies. If you want mums to last a little longer, buy them when they aren’t in full bloom yet. It seems like whenever I buy mums in full bloom, they last for about a week. The blooms die, and they do not rebloom. Deadheading doesn’t seem to work. So, I have heard from some Instagram people that buying them before they are blooming will give for a longer blooming time. I just might try it out this year.

I’ve had a lot more luck with pansies. They last for a very long time and do well in cool weather. Other possibilities include kale or grasses. I love these fall container ideas from Moore and Moore Garden Center below.

Lawn

If you didn’t work on your lawn last month, there is still time this month.

  1. First, aerate the lawn.
  2. Seed according to package directions.
  3. Water deeply (over 30 minutes) rather than more frequently but for less time.
  4. Fertilize according to package directions.
